For those who aren’t familiar with the game, Fortnite is a third-person action shooter video game where players battle each other in 100-player matches on an island. The first player to eliminate all of their opponents wins and becomes “The World’s Strongest Man.” It has been described as a cross between Call of Duty and Minecraft, but there are many differences that make it unique from both of those games.

There are several different modes available for gameplay, but I will be covering three of them here: Battle Royale (BR), Squad Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch. If you’re new to Fortnite, or if you just want some tips before jumping into a BR match, these five tips should help you get started.

1) Find Your Class

Before you jump into a match, you need to know which class suits your playstyle best. You can choose one of four classes when creating your character: Soldier, Gunner, Engineer, or Medic. Each class plays differently, so choosing the right one is important to maximize your performance during matches.

Soldier and Gunner are the most offensive classes, so they have great range and firepower to take out enemies quickly. They also have good mobility, making it easy to dodge enemy attacks. However, they can be hard to control at times, so it’s not recommended you use these two classes until you’ve gotten better at controlling your character.

Engineers are the defensive class, meaning they do well close up, but have little to no firepower. Their ability to repair damage is helpful, however, so this class is a good choice for someone who likes to stay safe and protect teammates. Engineers also have excellent movement speed and can easily avoid enemy fire. In addition, they have the best melee attack of all the classes, so if you plan to go for takedowns, this may be the best option for you.

Medic is a hybrid class that combines being both offensive and defensive, so this is a perfect class for people who like to fight back and forth with their opponent. They have a lot of health, so they can withstand a lot of punishment while still being able to dish it out sometimes. However, they don’t have much to no firepower, so they’ll need to rely on healing more often than others. Medics also have the best ranged ability of any class, giving them a huge advantage when playing solo.

2) Choose Your Weapon

Weapons are what give you the power to defeat your enemy. There are currently 18 guns, grenades, and explosives available in Fortnite, so you’ll likely have plenty of options to choose from. When selecting your weapon, consider your playstyle. Do you prefer guns or explosives? How about shotguns or sniper rifles?

I recommend starting off with a shotgun because it’s very simple to pick up and use, and it does decent damage. For a more advanced weapon, try aiming down the sights of a sniper rifle, as that will increase accuracy and range. Finally, you might want to invest in an assault rifle or machine gun depending on how fast you can aim and shoot. Both of these weapons have high accuracy and will kill multiple opponents at once.

3) Pick Your Building

Building placement is extremely important in Fortnite. Some buildings provide protection against incoming projectiles, while others grant bonuses such as extra health or armor. These bonuses are especially useful when building defenses around the map to prevent enemy spawns.

However, building alone won’t win you the battle. You’ll need to place buildings well to ensure your victory. To build effectively, you’ll need to know the layout of the map, the positions of the nearest enemy bases, and where the closest resources are located. Once you have that information, you can start placing your structures strategically to stop enemies from accessing certain areas.

4) Learn the Map

Maps in Fortnite are broken up into two sections: the main base area and the rest of the map. The main base area usually contains buildings and other structures that players must defend. Outside of this area lies the rest of the map, which is generally empty and unprotected by walls. This means that enemies can sneak up behind players while they’re unaware.

To reduce the amount of time spent defending and instead focus on attacking, look for ways to flank enemies. By doing this, you’ll be able to destroy structures and kill enemies without having to deal with the risk of being attacked.

5) Keep an Eye On Yourself

It’s essential to take care of yourself when playing Fortnite, especially when you’re in a group. Players have reported getting shot in the head by friendly fire during battles. Since you cannot see your own body parts, you might not realize you were hit until it’s too late. Always pay attention to your surroundings, even when you’re fighting alongside friends.

Remember that the majority of the game is played on foot, so if you run into trouble, try running away to regain momentum. But when you’re cornered, keep in mind that the safest place to hide is in a structure. Try to find cover and lay low until the danger passes.
